You're not alone. I think we've all been there, with doubt of how we are to approach a topic successfully. Trust that they Holy Spirit will guide you and pray for the intercession of Sts. Charles Borromeo and Robert Bellarmine for good measure.

Let us know how you are doing next year when you start up again.

Yes! There is hope for me after all! Thank you Carlos for your ideas and inspiration. After having taught 2nd grade for 2 yrs and a 3/4 grade combo class last year, I've been asked to teach 6th grade next year. I knew that my beloved collection of supplemental elementary games and crafts was not going to cut it for a classroom of tweens. So, here I am, building a new collection of ideas and tips for the fall. Thanks again for sharing your ideas and experiences. What seemed like a huge leap before, seems like a natural progression now.

Carlos, you observations are spot-on....you're a man after my own heart. I do not read from the textbook at all during class. I tell the kids to read the chapter before coming and I don't want them looking in the book during class, anyway. I want them participating and paying attention.

BTW here's my end-of-year post: http://platytera.blogspot.com/2009/05/fin-de-siecle.html

I also supplement the book lesson with other topics, such as this: http://platytera.blogspot.com/2009/04/carolina-catholics.html

"For “tweens”, they don’t want to be treated like children yet they do not reason quite the same way as a teenager."

That's right! One thing I like about them is they aren't jaded yet, but have a readiness to learn about God, and a desire to be taken seriously.
